WEEK 5 - THE WEEK WE LEARNED TO SAY FUNKY THINGS IN JAPANESE

ALOHA!!!

This week marks week five...I think.  We are all pretty confused on which week or day it is unless it's Devotional days or P-day.  We are all pretty sick of the food, like stomach aches.  The elders in our district have resorted to eating the flower petals off the flowers outside where we sit each day.  They say it tastes the same, maybe even better than MTC food.  It's good, yes, but literally salad, wrap or hamburger and fries everyday.

Today was a nice change though.  We went to the temple today at 7 am and we did sealings and got all of the ones mom sent me done!  YESS!   It was such a nice experience though and after we were done we went to the Temple cafeteria!  AHH they had real food and it was seriously the best meal I've had in the last month!  This is just an email about food, I guess.  Last night we all (District 27F) had a neat experience to try Japanese Pickled Plums....WHOA!  Nasty little buggers, like loaded with salt and they were bright (devil) red color.  It was a keiken (experience).

So, every Wednesday night all of the Shimai tachi (sisters) get together in our room and we talk and eat delicious food, such as poptarts, chips and salsa, rice crispies and more.  It's fun to just sit and talk.  We call it P-day Eve.  It's always fun and we have lots of laughs.  There are two sisters, like actual sisters who are twins both going to Japan!  They are in the same district together and it is so cool that they get to see each other before they don't get to for the next 16 months.  They both are hilarious and one of them is named Madeline.

Okay, y'all are going to laugh at me, but oh well.  So the other night I wanted to eat a Dove Chocolate that I had but it was lights out so I had to quickly jump into bed.  I had set the Dove Chocolate on my bed and I forgot that it was there.  The next morning I was blinded (by natural causes) and I looked down and all I could see was this dark brown spot on my bed!  I was so terribly confused.  My Doryo asked, did you "shard "  in the middle of the night?  I found the blue wrapping and I was so tired that I fell asleep before I could even enjoy my chocolate and it melted in my bed... Yeah.

I'm really progressing in the language farther than I every have before.  It's a little rough but I can conjure up my own sentences when we teach and AH it is awesome!  My Doryo struggles a bit with the sentence patterns and for some reason it frustrates me that we move so slow, but then as soon as we get into a lesson she is the one who brings in the spirit and makes our lessons all the difference.  She isn't a fight for yourself kind of girl.  She lets others go before her, very humble, but leans on me and turns to me to ask if things are okay.  I try not to get frustrated, but I want her to think for herself and do things for herself more in the sense that I want her to be strong and I want her to know that she has the power to do anything and doesn't need anybody's permission to do so (except God's).  I know I am here at the MTC for her, to help her realize that she can do anything, that she can do hard things.

One of our teachers pulled me aside one day and wanted to thank me for all that I do for my companion.  She and I looked up scriptures that really touched me.  Such as D & C 123: 16-17 It was just a helpful scripture to show me that I can also do hard things.  I'm trying to be more positive now and that has really helped me.

So our Chorotachi...OH Boy... they are a crazy bunch, but I love them to pieces.  I'm not even sure if it is allowed, but we will look up on the computer that is in our class room to virtually walk around Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka and other parts of Japan, to see where we will be going!

Yesterday was particularly interesting, the Choratachi (Elder's) have recently developed this weird ritual.  They all hold hands, close their eyes and narrate a joint "vision" session.  They visualize the last day in the MTC, how they will stay up all that night, the plane ride to Japan.  It's funny because they go into such detail trying to imagine leaving.  Well yesterday, while they were doing a "vision"  President Stevenson walks in.  I was crying I was laughing so hard and they didn't even know that he had walked in.  President Stevenson looked so absolutely concerned, confused and understanding all at the same time.

I love my boys.  I got the suitcase yesterday and literally the best thing I have ever gotten and it was just food and my favorite clothes.  Oh, and thanks for the penny whistle, now I can impress Wride Chorro with my flute skills.

Sunday night I finally got my picture with Sister Jackman and Sister Merrill!  Ahh!  It was at the choir practice and it was so fun to talk with Sister Merrill.  She's in Russia now and I'm so jealous because she gets to be in the field, her name tag looked sick all in Russian.

I see so many people from Hawaii that yell out "ZOE!" and I feel terrible because a few of them....I DON'T EVEN KNOW THEIR NAMES and I feel so bad!!!  Like this one girl was like, "your Zoe right?"  You were friends with Garrett and this person and that person..."  and I'm like nodding and also thinking why do so many people know my name.  I wore a Seasider shirt yesterday and there were a few Hawaiians from Laie that said Hi, which was cool.

Okay last thing...I'm so glad that you (Liam and Emma) are not old enough to get married while I am gone because this sister just found out that her sister is getting married next week... ahhhh it's sad...don't do it.  I already missed Eric's!

Okay, funky sayings in Japanese:
This morning or every morning:  Kesa mai asa
Long time no see translates to:  Hishibuti  (heseeshbooty)
Oh No, dang it, shoot:  SHIMATTA  Sometimes people say it too fast

Love always,

Oswald Shimai

WEEK 3 GOING ON 4 - NANI

Nani means FYI.  Hey Y'all!  I can't believe the time I have been here!  It's crazy!!  Sunday was fantastic!  We switched District Leaders around and now Elder Zoolander (Zollinger) is our DL.  He's the crazy slack/goof off type and it was a real surprise.  When the branch president, President Stevenson came in, we thought he was going to call Zoolander to be zone leader.   He came in and pointed to Zoolander to come.  President Stevenson has a deep voice, so it was kinda scary when he pointed.  After he left the room we all burst out laughing because he thought he was getting called as Zone Leader.

I listened to an awesome talk by Elder Holland  Sunday night (video) and it was amazing!  He told us, "This is your chance!  DON'T MISS IT!  A mission is the closest to real life that you will ever get!  So make it count!  This is God's work and we must do it His way!"  He read Mosiah 27:11,12, 18, 19 and then told us to go and astonish somebody!  Go and shake someone to their very core spiritually, to preach His Gospel by the Spirit.  He also said that we have more authority and knowledge than any king, prince, prime minister, etc., because our power comes from God.  Why is this (the teaching/preaching/learning) hard?  Because salvation is not a cheap experience.  Why should it be easy for us if it was not easy for Him.  It can't be easy.  So much depends on so little.  He read this poem that I really appreciate as a missionary.

Come to the edge He said.
-No we'll fall.
Come to the edge He said.
-No we'll fall.
COME to the edge HE said.
-We came to the edge, and he
pushed us,
and we flew!

I love this so much because we are now on the Lord's team (not that we weren't before) but now we are in play.  He won't let us fall, he will give us the means to fly, we just have to put our trust and our faith in Him.

That was all Sunday.  Monday I was stressing out about everything, the lessons, TRC (FHE but we teach in Japanese to members), my companion, the language.  It was a rough Monday, but it wasn't until President Stevenson (super nice man) came in and talked to me and just boosted my spirits, the kind of boosting that I needed.  So, then Tuesday was so much better and our lesson with Aoyagi san was fantastic and so filled with the Spirit.  We taught him how to pray that day.  Wednesday we got new missionaries (JAPANESE ONES).  Now we are the sempai (seniors).  I'VE SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE FROM HAWAII!!!!!  AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
GOD IS SO GOOD!  So happy that all these people I know and love have come to serve a mission!  AH, SO GOOD!

Elder Jenson (Garrett) left Monday morning at 3 a.m.  WOO!  He landed in France yesterday but luckily I caught him Sunday night when all our (Japanese) sempai were leaving and we got a picture!  I just wanted to hug him!!!  UGH, mish problems.

I'm so sick of the MTC FOOD!  I literally eat oatmeal for breakfast, salads for lunch and dinner and an apple somewhere.  Even though they are salads doesn't mean the food doesn't do weird things to your stomach....LIKE when this one Elder in our district let one loose in the middle of an investigator lesson!!!  I swear, he does not get social ques.

Last night we had all the sisters in our branch in our room and had chips and mango salsa!!!
YUM!  We all tried to guess each others (first) names!  There are a set of twins in our branch and they both got called to JAPAN!  So cool!  We were all having a blast together and it's so much fun.

Every morning we get up at 5:45 to get ready to go to the GYM.  I can't believe I actually get up.  Oh, oh, we went to the temple this morning and we did initiatories and it was so nice!  Joe brought me this spring toy that now the whole district plays with, because we literally need something to keep us from going insane!

I know I'm jumping around, sorry....

Tuesday night our DL, Zoolander got up and told us how much he appreciates us and loves us and that if we needed a blessing , that he would be more than willing to give it.  It was awesome because you could really feel the Spirit in the room when he said that.  Fast forward to earlier that day, I was talking to him about maybe mentioning to "us" about priesthood blessings.    My doryo really needed one but she has to ask for herself.  She feels sometimes that she is a burden and doesn't want to bother the Elders with that.  She had the priesthood growing up, but not the blessings part of it, her dad just didn't do it.  I really appreciated Zollinger Chorro for doing that.  The next day Jeo told my how good she felt to hear Zollinger say that and that she wanted one!  I was jumping up and down inside.  So while most of the district left to do something else, the trio gave her a blessing.  Yardley offered it but none of them had really done it before, so I held the handbook open for it and the three gave her a blessing.  Yardley spoke but we all knew that it wasn't him speaking, it was our Father.   It was so powerful and so amazing!  These young men really do hold a sacred power and I LOVE IT!  He told us afterwards that the words just came out, that it wasn't him speaking and we all felt it.

OKAY!  I REALLY HAVE TO HEAD OUT NOW BUT I LOVE ALL OF YOU AND I'LL TRY TO SEND PICTURES!!!

LOVE with ALLLLLLL OF MY HEART!!

WEEK 2 - MISSIONARY TRAINING CENTER

There is literally way too much to type out which is good and bad at the same time.  HMMM...Let's start with Elder Russell M. Nelson coming and speaking to us this last Tuesday!  OH MY CHICKEN (this French girl on our floor says that all the time).  When he walked into the room, the Spirit grew 10 times bigger!  I wrote in my journal, what if that was the prophet who walked in, or the Savior?  Imagine the intensity.  We would feel the truth that that is Christ.  So sweet!  In the choir we sang "Be Still My Soul" and it was AMAZing!!!

Our district (mainly the Elders and I) like to sing and I think I already told y'all this, but we get together and sing and we are all in the choir.  It's so much fun because as each day passes, the love for each other grows and grows.

In District 27F:
Elder Robins and Wride
Elders Myers and Walker
Elder Yardley, Zollinger and Reid (Mason Reid, the Crellin's nephew)
Sister Smith and Pickrell and then me and my doryo.

We all like to have fun and listen to the stories that our teacher has to tell us about Japan, like the fermented soy beans that MINASAN (everyone) eats for breakfast...they grow when you eat them...EW!

Do you know the Horman's from Texas?   Well Braxton is here and I went to see if he recognized me and HE DID!!!!  OH MY CHICKEN!  It was soooo awesome!!!!  It was so cool and now we are going to email, he left this last Wednesday to Washington, D.C. South.

I miss y'all like crazy but I hope that things are going well!

Jeo is great, but she's going through some tough things.  I just want to try my best to be there for her!  I love her to bits.  She is so strong, I don't think she even realizes it.  I'm so glad she is my companion.!!

Courtney, Whitney and I are going to try to get a pic together this next devotional so that will be fun!

Well, I have to go!  Ai shitte imasu (Aye shtay mas) - I love you!!!
